Self-employment

Could self-employment be right for you?

The current climate means that many people are feeling vulnerable in their existing roles. If not because they are frightened of redundancy then because the situation is highlighting a hidden desire to break free and seek the independence that self-employment can bring.

Self Employment Statistics

  • The number of self-employed has increased from 3.3 million people (12.0% of the labour force) in 2001 to 4.8 million (15.1% of the labour force) in 2017
  • Self-employment now represents a larger share of employment, up from around 12% of the labour force in 2001 to around 15.1% in 2016.
  • The increase in self-employment over this period has been driven by those who work on their own, with a partner but no employees. This group now accounts for 4.0 million workers in 2016 compared with 2.4 million in 2001.
  • This rise is predominantly due to fewer people leaving self employment than in the past
  • The number of over 65's who are self employed has more than doubled in the past 5 years to nearly half a million
  • The number of women in self employment is increasing faster than the number of men
  • Female part-time self-employment increased from 439,000 to 812,000 between 2001 and 2016
