Self-employment

Could self-employment be right for you?

The current climate means that many people are feeling vulnerable in their existing roles. If not because they are frightened of redundancy then because the situation is highlighting a hidden desire to break free and seek the independence that self-employment can bring.

Self Employment Statistics

From May 2009 to May 2010 unemployment in the UK rose by a further 92,000 to 2.47M

Nationally, around 20 per cent of working over 50s are self-employed. These self employed over 50's benefit from better business survival rates than younger people, mainly through life experience and better planning & research. So this can sometimes be a solution to continuing to work in today’s economic climate, and achieving the flexibility to fit around other commitments.

Analysis by a Regional Development Agency (RDA) has claimed the South West will face increasing job losses and company closures.

Recent research from the Finance & Leasing Association found small firms in the South West as well as the West Midlands and London are experiencing worse sales than other regions, leading them to cut staff and scale back investment plans.

Some employees are planning to start their own business if they are made redundant, while others are increasing their transferrable skills.

Figures from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) show five per cent of managers are intending to launch their own company if they are made redundant. A quarter of staff members are taking a new qualification to boost their CV, while 22 per cent plan to improve their transferrable skills.
